There are 2 reasons I remain unconvinced:
1. You pour your heart out into a blog that a few people read (but You have no idea who of your friends or anyone in this strange blogging world is actually reading it), and even though people may be interested, you have no knowledge of that. You don't know if people are actually keeping up with what's going on in your life. When you catch up with people, you don't know whether to tell them what you've written in your blog, because you don't know if they've read it. And then, if someone actually does read your blog, it is very unlikely they'll comment. So you don't know if they care, or have advice, or want to share a laugh about something that happened. There is no communication between friends. Just a few words in a one-sided conversation.
2. I read your blog. You read mine. That's great... except I still don't feel like we've gotten any closer, and I presume you feel the same about me. So why do we blog? What is the point? Why don't we just email, phone, or (gasp) even write a letter?! And then get one back in return. One that responds to what you've written as well as passing on new information. The problem with blogs, is that everyone writes about how they are going without responding to any one else. How is this caring for others? Is blogging just a waste of time; could that time be better spent in another pursuit - perhaps even that phone call?
I need convincing. Is there purpose in a blog? Is it actually communicating with those you miss? Do you feel any closer to me from reading my blog? And should I feel any closer to you for the fact that you've read it and made no comment? (That's assuming I somehow know you've read it.) The jury is still out on this one. But maybe not for long...

I think if you're blogging something, you need to be doing it primarily for your own enjoyment. If other people read it or comment or somehow interact with you about it, that should be seen as a bonus.
ReplyDeleteIs it communicating with those that you miss? In a way... I'm sure some people are interested in what you guys are up to these days and would enjoy reading about it on this blog.
I suppose this is where Facebook has some advantages that I hadn't considered previously. People can easily post a comment or just 'like' something that you post. It fosters a lot more interaction.
But if your goal is that people would communicate back to you, then as you said, you should consider writing a letter or something.
In conclusion, if you enjoy writing about what's going on and what you want to say is too long to put on Facebook, then just do it and enjoy it. Don't do it expecting something in return. If people respond or comment, that's just a bonus. If you don't enjoy writing about what's going on, then don't make life hard for yourself.
God bless,
Kieran.
I pretty much agree with Kieran. It depends on the reason for the communication as to what method you use. Also the people who read it will prefer different methods of communication. I always forget to read blogs, so that's not always the best way to update me about goings on. On the other hand, I know people who read lots of blogs, including of people they don't know.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that I write in my blog (although that is sometimes very rare), it's more for me to get things out of my head, to write them down. I'm not too fussed if people read it or not. It's really up to them.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.

ReplyDeleteI did list my experiences of my feelings of blogs but I just got upset and thought about my memories of my blog so I'm just going to say, Facebook. Facebook has notes and everyone can see them, everyone can comment and it pops up on everyone's page to say that you have produced a new note.
ReplyDeleteI like blogs. I don't write on my very often, but I like them. And I'll definitely read yours - even if I don't reply, I like just reading your thoughts (in a non-creepy manner!) and knowing what's on your mind, even tho you are a fair way away!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what I think, but I like everyone's contributions. The idea of a blog is interesting, but I agree with you, Krystal, that it is much nicer to interact in a more personal way. I miss you guys, muchly.
ReplyDeleteNo offence, but who is 'Daughter of the King'?
